Equine Welfare Policies

  • Andrew Wilson & Co (AWC) equine welfare policy pertains to Meat trade buyers and/or associates (horses purchased by knackeries or abattoirs for the purpose of slaughter).

Andrew Wilson & Co Online Sales team DO NOT ALLOW meat trade buyers to buy or attempt to purchase any horse that is entered in any AWC online sale.

AWC team are dedicated to achieve the best possible outcome for any horse entered in our sale.

This code of practice has been enforced since the inception of the online platform to reinforce and reassure the vendor that AWC takes equine welfare very seriously.

  • Whilst AWC do not condone skinny horses presented for sale we do understand that peoples circumstances change financially and seasonally. It is in the horses best interest that we facilitate a better outcome for them and we ask people to respect this decision and refrain from commenting.

  • When entering your thoroughbred in the sale PLEASE NOTE:

All thoroughbreds must have clear photos of brands and drop numbers so that every attempt is made to identify the horse on Australian Stud book (ASB).

This is NOT NEGOTIABLE and if the brands or race name information is not provided then your horse cannot be accepted in the sale.

Even before the introduction of the AWC Online sale, AWC have had a strong working relationship with Racing Victoria (RV) and Racing New South Wales (RNSW) Equine Welfare departments.

For every sale both racing bodies are provided with details of the horse, (racename ,age, microchip/brand) vendor contact information and location.

At the conclusion of the sale they are given the sale price and the purchaser’s details.

This is done to comply with the respective Equine Welfare agreements and to ensure horse traceability and the continued welfare of the horse.

There is open communication before and after the sale with AWC and the Racing Equine Welfare departments regarding the sale of each of the thoroughbreds and any assistance that may be needed to get the best possible outcome for the horse post sale.

    RV Equine Welfare:

AWC have a committed relationship with the equine welfare department to ensure the best possible outcome for the Victorian thoroughbreds. All registered thoroughbreds that are sold through the AWC online sale are encouraged to be ‘claimed‘ on RV’s Off The Track Community (www.ottcommunity.com.au ).

    RNSW Equine Welfare:

AWC are an approved livestock auction with RNSW, and we comply and enforce the RNSW Code of Practice; that any horse that is deemed to be a domiciled NSW thoroughbred has an immediate $600 reserve and vendor and purchaser details are provided to ensure ongoing traceability.
